Schloss Prösels 2009

Castel Presule

This castle was built in the time of Maximilan by the Lords of Fič.

Castel Presule islocated in a delightful landscape on the right, slightly before reaching Fič allo Sciliar. The Mediaeval Castle has been mentioned for the first time in a document dating back to the year 1279 as “Castrum Presile”. However, the castle is supposed to be constructed around 1200 by the Lords of Fié, but it was established as it appears today in the 16th century only. In those times Leonhard of Fič the old castle was transformed into a majestic building, probably this happened in 1517.

Until his decease in 1503, the castellan of Tyrol lived in the castle. In the following century the castle changed hands fourteen times and after the death of the last lord, the “Board of trustees Castel Presule” purchased the castle and is still in its possession. After having been restaured, it reopened its gates in 1982 and was made open for public. Not only guided tours are offered, but the castle is also venue for concerts, exhibitions and theatre performances.

Worthwhile are for example the collection of arms, most of which date back to the 19th century, but some are also from the period date of Leonhard von Völs.
By the way: also parts of the “Oswald von Wolkenstein horse tournament” take place in the castle. Every year this Mediaeval festival attracts a large number of visitors to Fič allo Sciliar.
