Museion

The Museion represents the museum of modern and contemporary art of Bolzano.

The Museum of modern and contemporary art in Bolzano is hosted in a particular building that has a strong visual impact and was inaugurated in May 2008. It is an open Museum, designed by the Berlin architects KSV Krüger Schuberth Vandreike, its front and rear facades represent transparency and openness.

Founded in 1985 by a private association with the financial support of the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol, the museum was then located in Via Sernesi. Its original stated purpose was to promote arts between Ala and Kufstein, so to speak the historical region of Tyrol, in the period subsequent to 1900. Only at the beginning of the 90s the museum extended its sphere of activity and started comparing German and Italian art. This is also when it was renamed “Museion”.

Also the foundation bears the name “Museion” and directs and administers the museum, that is by the way financed by private and public funding, in cooperation with the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. The museum itself is not only a conglomeration of objet d’arts, but also an international art studio with interdisciplinary orientation. Furthermore the “Museion” addresses every generation, also the youngest citizens, for whom there are separate action courses or the museums’ inchworm, which makes kids experience the museum in a playful manner.
