Museion Bolzano

Founded in 1985 by a private association with the financial support of the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol, the Museion was then located in the Via Sernesi road in Bolzano. Its original stated purpose was to promote arts between Ala in the Trentino and Kufstein in North Tyrol, so to speak the historical region of Tyrol, in the period subsequent to 1900 AD. Only at the beginning of the Ninties the museum extended its sphere of activity and started comparing German and Italian art. This is also when it was named "Museion". Nowadays the Museion Foundation, made up of the Museion Association and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, directs and administers the museum, that is by the way financed by private and public funding.

The Museion is hosted in a particular and futuristic building that has a strong visual impact and was inaugurated in May 2008 together with a new a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists in the district of Centro-Piani. It is an open museum, designed by the Berlin architects KSV Krüger Schuberth Vandreike - its front and rear facades represent transparency and openness.

The collection boasts more than 4,500 artworks, the main topics are art and language, sculpture, artistic critiques of the contemporary period and the work of non-European artists. The museum itself is not only a conglomeration of objet d'arts, but also an international art studio with interdisciplinary orientation. Furthermore the Museion addresses every generation, also the youngest citizens, for whom there are separate action courses or the museums' inchworm, which makes kids experience the Museion in a playful manner. And how to reach it? It is located at the Piazza Piero Siena square, near the Talvera Bridge and the Bolzano University. The museum itself has no parking possibilities, but it can reached in a 10-minute walk from the Arcades of Bolzano.
