Museum Ladin Ciastel de Tor

This museum is located in the Dolomites and is dedicated to the history of the Ladin populartion as well as to their language.

The consciousness of the own language is decisive for the identity of the Ladin speaking population. The language is not only a means of self-assertion towards the outerworld, but also a connection between the five ladin valleys of the Italian provinces of Belluno, Trento and Bolzano. Still today the original Ladin language is spoken in these Dolomite valleys.

The Museum Ladin, hosted in the Ciastel de Tor in San Martino in Badia, is dedicated to this particular piece of the culture and language of South Tyrol. In 2001 the museum was inaugurated and provides an insight into language, history, culture, legends, archaeology and craftwork of the Ladin population.

The focus of the museum is of course set on the language and tradition of this population, but also archaeological findings of the Stone Age are exhibited. Part of the permanent exhibitions are also wood-carved toys from Valgardena, wooden boxes with typical decorations of Val Badia, jewellery and silver filigree souvenirs of Cortina d’Ampezzo and many more items.
