Museum of animals
Introducing you to the reign of animals in South Tyrol.
In 1972 Simon Ratschiller, an experienced taxidermist, opened South Tyrol’s only museum of animals. Located in Postal near to Merano, it hosts a total of 300 different types of birds as well as numerous mammals found all over South Tyrol’s mountains, pastures and woods.
Simon Ratschiller dissects only animals - such as bears, harvest mice and golden eagles - that were previously killed by hunters or died accidentally. For song birds he’s got a special authorization and numerous migratory birds complete his collection. Did you know that South Tyrol is especially rich in birds?
Furthermore, Simon Ratschiller is working for the only biotope all over the Val d’Adige valley. This is also the reason why he “knows” his animals fairly well.
Opening hours:
from April 1-October 15 from 10-12:15 am and 4-7 pm; closed on Fridays and Saturdays, rainy days excluded.
