Messner Mountain Museum

One idea - five venues: the Messner Mountain Museums, short MMM, is a project by the famous alpinist Reinhold Messner.

MMM Firmian, MMM Juval, MMM Dolomites, MMM Ortles and MMM hill tribes - that’s how the five Messner Mountain Museums are called. Messner’s vision was to create mountain museums - and he definitely succeeded in five different venues!

MMM Firmian represents the centre - not only from an administrative point of view, but it is also the centrepiece regarding event organisation. The focus of this museum is set on the mountains and the art and history of their ascent. The so called “white tower” is dedicated to the history of South Tyrol.

MMM Juval is dedicated to the “myth of the mountains” and includes various exhibits by Reinhold Messner regarding this myth. Moreover inside the antique castle towering high above Naturno, there is the worldwide largest tibetika exhibition.

The MMM Dolomites on Monta Rite in the south of Cortina d’Ampezzo, located at 2,181 m asl, concentrates on “the vertical world” … of the Dolomites.

The MMM in Val Venosta, MMM Ortles, is based on the famous Ortles as mountain peak. The museum is also called “glacial world” and focuses on the world of ice, referring to a novel of Christoph Ransmayr.

The fifth MMM is still in planning phase and will be dedicated to hill tribes. Venue for this interactive Mountain Museum is Brunico Castle. Reinhold Messner also intends to invite representatives of various hill tribes in order to promote the exchange of experiences. Moreover there will be exhibits regarding the culture of the Sherpa, Indios, Tibetans and Hunza.
