The astronomical observatory “Max Valier” and the sun observatory “Peter Anich” are located in Collepietra at an altitude of 1,350 m asl and is South Tyrol’s one and only facility of this kind. Established in 2002, it provides an insight into world of space, the sun and moon and fascinates both inhabitants and visitors.
The observatory consists of a cupola of 6 m, which contains a mirror telescope, a viewing deck, where one can position various small telescopes as well as a lecture room. For all those who would like to know more about the telescopes, there you go with some data: mirror telescope by Astrooptik Keller (80 cm Cassegrain f10 / f6, friction drive); lense-telescope by Takahashi (152 mm APO-Refractor, f6).
If you plan a visit of the observatory you should also make a hike along the planetary trail. However, those who visit the observatory at nighttime will enjoy a breathtaking view into the sky. Planets, star clusters and lunar crates… a great adventure.
By the way: the South Tyrolean observatory is directed by local astronomers who have also chosen the stand.
