Walk on the Freud Promenade to Collalbo

A pleasant promenade at the Renon reminds of the 150th birthday of Sigmund Freud

The Freud-Promenade at the Renon (Ritten) proceeds from Soprabolzano (Oberbozen) via Stella di Renon (Lichtenstern) to Collalbo (Klobenstein) (and vice versa), it takes 1.5 hours to do this walking-tour. It is named after the famous psychologist Dr. Sigmund Freud, who spent his holidays in summer 1911 in the Hotel Bemelmans-Post at Collalbo. On the occasion of the 150th birthday of the Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, the already existing path no. 35 was renovated in May 2006 according to a project by the psychoanalysis historian Francesco Marchioro and named after Freud.

On a splendid summer day we start a shorter version of the tour, we park our car at Soprabolzano and experience the Freud-Promenade towards Collalbo with our little son in the pushchair. Up here, on the high plateau of the Renon, the air is genial, we enjoy the freshness, because in the basin of Bolzano it becomes already really hot.

Single old, beautiful houses line the promenade, gorgeous nature with ripe elderberries, raspberries and apricots surrounds us. Several benches invite us to take a rest, including an amazing panoramic view on the Dolomites. The Sciliar (Schlern) and the group of the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) with the Cima Santner (Santnerspitze), the Cima Euringer and the Cima del Catinaccio (Rosengartenspitze) are in front of us.

At the end of the gravel path the promenade turns off left and immediately transitions into a forest path on the right. After a short forest area we arrive at Collalbo. Now it's hard to decide if we allow ourselves to enjoy a refreshment here or if we better walk back to our starting point, the Hotel Lichtenstern, and take a rest there. Such decisions are really nice to make! If you want to do the Freud-Promenade we really recommend to take the Renon cable car up to Soprabolzano. This new funicular operates since 2009 and connects Bolzano with Soprabolzano, where the Freud-Promenade starts resp. ends (it runs every 4 minutes).

The Freud Promenade was completed in 2016 with the installation of 13 benches and rest areas designed by architects David and Verena Messner and marked by a Freud aphorism.
