This alpine hike takes us up a mountain giant of the Ortles Alps, a magnificent panoramic peak standing at 3,325 metres

The valley station of the cable car in Solda is already at an altitude of 1,900 metres, and it quickly takes us up to 2,600 metres. The weather on this July day is sunny, and a wonderful mountain tour to the Punta Beltovo di Dentro lies ahead of us - a three-thousand-metre peak in the Ortles Alps.
Even the view from the mountain station of the famous trio of Gran Zebrù, Monte Zebrù, and Ortles is unforgettable. Following trail no. 151, we walk along the ski lift pylons, climbing gently through wide meadows. In winter, this is where the slopes of the Solda Glacier Skiing Area run.
After 40 minutes, we reach the Madriccio Mountain Hut - in mid-July, there are still extensive patches of old snow here. Another half an hour brings us to the Passo del Madriccio, the 3,123-metre-high pass leading into the Val Martello, which can be reached on a four-hour mountain tour. The air is already a bit thinner here. We still have 200 metres of elevation to cover to reach the summit of the Punta Beltovo di Dentro (Hintere Schöntaufspitze).
We follow the markers to the left, climbing steeply upwards. Sure-footedness is required due to the scree and boulders - this is the most challenging section of the tour. After another half an hour, we reach the summit in the heart of the Stelvio National Park. Mt. Gran Zebrù and Mt. Ortles, both over 3,800 metres high, seem to be at eye level, while the Cima Cevedale and the Monte Cevedale, both over 3,700 metres high, tower to the south-west. After a short rest, we turn back.
Via the Passo del Madriccio, we reach the Madriccio Hut at an altitude of 2,820 metres again, where we stop this time. At the mountain station of the Solda Cable Car, we decide to descend on foot. We walk past the left side of the mountain station to the Città di Milano Hut and follow the forest trail to Solda. By the way: The slightly shorter and easier mountain tour on the Solda Glacier Trail also starts at this same point, the mountain station of the Solda Cable Car.

- The overall time shown above refers to the walking time only, not including breaks. The hike up the Punta Beltovo di Dentro is glacier-free all the way to the summit and does not feature any particularly difficult sections. Even though this mountain is considered one of the "easiest three-thousand-metre peaks in South Tyrol", the hike should not be underestimated. A good level of fitness and sure-footedness are absolutely essential for the ascent!
