The Tre Cime di Lavaredo (”Three peaks of Lavaredo” or “Drei Zinnen”) are an alpenstock of the Sesto Dolomites and are characterised by their distinctive form. Due to this characteristic they are world-famous and are considered to be the symbol of (Sesto) Dolomites. The famous north face of this alpenstock is completely situated on municipal territory of Dobbiaco, whereas the southern part of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo belongs to the province of Belluno. The border between the two provinces passes above the Tre Cime summits.
However, the famous alpenstock consists of the Cima Grande (2,999 m) placed in the middle, the Cima Piccola (2,857 m) and the Cima Ovest (west peak, 2,973 m). The north face of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo is one of the most famous alpine images.
The first ascent took place in 1869 by Paul Grohmann, Franz Innerkofler and Peter Salcher. Soon after other alpinists scaled the Cima Ovest as well as the Cima Piccola.
Round the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, there are numerous hiking paths - always with view on the famous three peaks. One of the most popular paths starts at the Rifugio Auronzo refuge and terminates the at the Rifugio Locatelli, leading by Monte Paterno. This path is really popular, as you might recognise in summer days…
