Vedrette di Ries

A mountain range in the heart of the Central Alps

Although the Vedrette di Ries make up a small part of the Central Alps, this area is an eldorado for experienced alpinists and climbers due to the ragged and striking mountain peaks. Great parts of the mountain chain are situated on South Tyrolean territory, a small area, however, belong to East Tyrol (Austria). The name of the mountain chain derives from the homonymous glacier.

The Vedrette di Ries, along with the “Ankogelgruppe”, “Goldberggruppe”, “Glocknergruppe”, “Schobergruppe”, “Kreuzeckgruppe”, “Granatspitzgruppe”, “Venedigergruppe” and the “Villgratner” mountains, form the Hohe Tauern Mountains. The boundaries of the mountain chain are formed by the Passo Gola in the north, while the east boundary passes from the Arvental river to “Jagdhausalm”. In the south, however, it passes from Passo Stalle to the Valle Anterselva to Valdaora in Val Pusteria.

The highest mountain peak of the Vedrette di Ries is called Collalto (3.436 m asl) and it is directly situated at the frontier. The summit, however, belongs to Italian territory.
