At the bottom of Monte Ganda (in the picture: Castel Guardia in Appiano) you can find the ice holes in a 200 m long and 10-50 m wide hollow.
Here, at a height of 500 m and in a wood filled with rocks, you can find plants which normally only grow at 1,200 m above sea level: a truly fantastic natural phenomenon!
The further you walk into the hollow the more you can feel the change of temperature: It is really cold in here! A crack system in the Porphyry stone causes a continuous cold draught.
By the way: The ice holes are a popular walking destination. So go and visit them even in summer! At all other times of the year the motto is: dress up warmly!!
