Carnival in South Tyrol

Also in South Tyrol the period of carnival is celebrated enthusiastically.

Wild and enormous, ringing and rattling, funny and noisy… that’s carnival in South Tyrol. Of course there are events for every taste…

There are numerous traditions and events all over South Tyrol taking place in carnival. There are e.g. the so called „Zussln“ at Prato allo Stelvio or the „Schnappviecher“ at Termeno and all these events have got something in common, which is chasing away evil spitits and demons, as winter months have rather been hard in former times and food has often run short. The beginning of spring has eagerly been awaited and for this reason winter had to be chased away.

Still today these ancient traditions become alive in many South Tyrolean villages in carnival. Banishing winter is not the main reason why they are organised today, nevertheless these events are very popular with inhabitants and tourists alike.
