Between the fruit orchards, forests and meadows above the Merano valley basin, a few buildings peek out on a green hill: They are called St. George's Church, Ulenturm tower, Georgenhof farm and Gutshof Moser and form the centre of the small village of San Giorgio (St. Georgen). From here you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view on Merano, the Adige Valley and the peaks of the Sarentino Alps and the Tessa Group. In spring, the apple trees are in blossom all around.

The pretty round church in the centre is dedicated to St. George. Many South Tyrolean villages are named after their church patron saint, and so the hamlet of San Giorgio is also protected by St. George (San Giorgio, in Italian, and Sankt Georg, in German). The little church was built in the 12th and 13th century and used to be the chapel of St. George's Castle. You can still see well-preserved frescoes from the 14th century inside, which depict, among other things, the martyrdom of St. George. From the castle mentioned above, only the keep, the Ulenturm, has been preserved.

Hikers can often be seen on the Scena Waalweg path, which takes you past San Giorgio to the centre of Scena. The Meadow Path is also popular: The hike to Verdines and San Giorgio leads past the Kampfl Cross, a place of power, viewpoint and resting spot. At St. George's Church, at about 700 m a.s.l., the circular hike then reaches its highest point before returning back to the valley.
