Frangarto

Frangart forms the transition from Bolzano to the Oltradige area: Castel Firmiano rises proudly high above it

A turn-off takes you from the edge of Bolzano to the small village of Frangarto (Frangart, in German) and further on to Cornaiano (Girlan). Its landmark, the mighty Firmiano Castle, can be seen already from the town: It is home to the MMM Firmiano, one of Reinhold Messner's museum projects, and can also be reached on foot from Frangarto. Another attraction is located on the wooded hill near the Hochfrangart residence: the sphere that can be seen glittering from afar is one of the many artworks by the already deceased artist Karl Nicolussi-Leck.

The village centre below consists of the neo-Gothic parish church of St. Joseph, the fairground, the clubhouse, the kindergarten and the school. The large area next to the playground belongs to the "Fruma" fruit market. The ideal location near the main transit routes is also indicated by the name of the village: Frangarto used to be called Fronegarte, the landlord's garden. And among the old landowners are indeed the princes of Tyrol and the bishops of Trento, the Wilten Abbey near Innsbruck, the oldest monastery in Tyrol, and the Holy Spirit Hospital in Bolzano.

Frangarto is a good base for active holidays: the Val d'Adige Cycle Path takes you all the way to Merano and the Oltradige Cycle Path to Lake Caldaro. By mountain bike, you can discover the Mendola Pass and explore the Monticolo Forest nature reserve with its two lakes. For arriving by public transport or for cultural and shopping excursions to Bolzano, there is a train station on the edge of the village.
