Town of Bressanone

The episcopal town of Bressanone combines medieval-baroque flair with modern lifestyle and a fascinating alpine world

Costa d'Elvas, Stufles, Millan, Zinggen, Rosslauf and the old town - these are the quarter of the town of Bressanone (Stadt Brixen). The small Alpine town at the confluence of Isarco and Rienza has been an episcopal town for thousand years and was reigned by prince-bishops for centuries. Today it is the third largest of South Tyrol's eight towns and a popular holiday destination. As it is the main town of the Valle Isarco, you can find a hospital, higher education and a university here.

The medieval Arcades, the venerable Bishop’s Palace with its Diocesan Museum and the Ziggelplatz square in Stufles, the oldest part of the town, tell about the long history of Bressanone, which already began in 990 AD. During a leisurely stroll, a visit to the cathedral, its famous cloister and a cappuccino at the Cathedral Square must not be missed. Numerous events take place here, such as the Bressanone Summer Emotions, the Bread and Strudel Market, the Mountainbike Testival and the Christmas Market. 15 years ago, also Pope Benedikt XVI spent his holidays in Bressanone.

Town and mountains reach hands here. The local mountain is the favourite excursion destination of many inhabitants and an attraction for lots of active holidaymakers: the Plose, a promising skiing area in winter and a wonderful region for hikes and bike trips in the Bressanone Bike Park in summer. Among the leisure activities there are also the Acquarena swimming pool with bowling alley, sauna and restaurant, the Stella Cinema and the Forum Bressanone with its cultural offer.
