Skiing, tobogganing, hiking or a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride across the snow-covered landscape of Alpe di Siusi make winter holidays in this area a lasting experience. The skiing area on the largest alpine pasture of Europe is above all popular with families.
Castelrotto is a market town comprising several villages between the Valle Isarco and the Valgardena, in the area round the striking Sciliar mountain. The municipality includes the villages of Siusi allo Sciliar, Alpe di Siusi, San Michele, San Osvaldo, San Valentino, Tagusa, Tisana, Bulla, Roncadizza and Oltretorrente. The last three, however, are located on the south-western side of the Valgardena valley and belong to the Ladin cultural circle. Often these villages are considered to be part of Ortisei.
The municipal territory of Castelrotto stretches from 400 to 2,958 m asl and also includes the vast Alpe di Siusi, which is the largest high Alpine pasture of Europe, making up almost half of the municipal territory. Also the Sciliar Catinaccio nature park stretches over parts of Castelrotto.
Boasting about 6.500 inhabitants and a surface are of more than 11,000 hectares, Castelrotto is ideal for those seeking relaxation in great environs. While the Alpe di Siusi skiing area makes you get moving on the slopes, the Alpine pasture landscape is ideal for a walk in summertime. Also, can you experience this fabulous scenery by bike or on the horseback.
