Jenesien San Genesio

San Genesio Atesino

The municipality of S. Genesio is located high above the provincial capital of Bolzano and is surrounded by meadows and larch trees.

Embedded in the charming natural scenery of the Salto high plateau, there is the municipality of S. Genesio, extending at 760 to 1,300 m asl. The municipality comprises the chief village of S. Genesio as well as the component localities of Avigna, Valas, Cologna and Montoppio, counting some 2,900 inhabitants. You can reach these villages via a road as well as a cable-car from Bolzano. The cable-car was built in 1937 and used to be the only means of public transport connecting Bolzano and S. Genesio for a long period of time.

S. Genesio is considered a paradise for horse riders and hikers. The vast network of trails is ideal for extended hiking, cycling tour and promenades. The Salto is by the way a popular excursion destination all over the year. This is also where you can find the vastest larch meadow of Europe. The impressive earth pyramids can be visited in the surroundings of Cologna.
