Pavicolo

The thermal water of the Merano Thermal Baths comes from the Monte San Vigilio, on whose slope lies the hamlet of Pavicolo

The farm hamlet of Pavicolo (Pawigl) is located on the southern slope of the Monte San Vigilio (Vigiljoch) above Lana. It can be reached via a mountain road that branches off from the Ultimo Road above Lana. The Monte San Vigilio Cable Car, which has been reopened in August 2023 and starts in Lana di Sopra, ends above the village at the Vigilius Mountain Resort at 1,486 m a.s.l. This spot offers a magnificent view on the Val d'Ultimo and Adige Valleys all the way to the Dolomites.

In Pavicolo itself, the so-called "Pawiglhöfe" farms are well known, which give the village its idyllic and rustic character. It consists of a few buildings, among which are the inn and the medieval St. Oswald Church. Together with Lana di Sotto, Lana di Mezzo, Lana di Sopra and Foiana, Pavicolo today forms the municipality of Lana, the seventh largest municipality of South Tyrol.

Numerous paths lead through nature on the Monte San Vigilio. The alpine pasture of Naturno, Mt. Guardia Alta, Lake Nero and the St. Vigilius Church directly on the ridge are remarkable excursion destinations. Pavicolo and the Monte San Vigilio are also a popular meeting place for paragliders and hang-gliders, who usually use the Merano-Maia Racecourse for landing. What else connects Merano with the Monte San Vigilio is the clinically tested mineral water that is piped from here into the thermal baths. In winter, its small ski area offers fun on the slopes and on its sledge run.
