Tesimo

The largest and oldest grapevine of Europe is located in Katzenzungen Castle, which belongs to the municipality of Tesimo.

> Altitude: 634 m asl

The municipality of Tesimo with its localities Prissiano, Caprile, Grissiano, Naraun and Platzers has already been inhabited by aristocrats several centuries ago. Numerous castles and residences date back to this period of time.

There is e.g. Castel Valle, which originally has been called “Thurm zu Vall”. Another impressive castle is Katzenzungen Castle, which has been mentioned for the first time under the reign of Henricus de Cazzenzunge in 1244. However, there are only some of the examples of castles dating back to these times. Worth to be visited is also Wehrburg Castle as well as Castel Zwingenburg.

The main economic sectors of the village of Tesimo are viticulture, livestock breeding as well as agriculture. Farms and huts characterise the landscape. The low mountain range of Tesimo and Prissiano has already been inhabited in times of the Langobards and Romans and has first been referred to as “Tesana”.

In summer Tesimo and surroundings is perfect for pleasant hikes and also in autumn hiking makes you best enjoy the great and colourful landscape. This is also where the traditional “Törggelen” is celebrated - one of the main events in autumn is the “Keschtnriggl”, a celebration which is dedicated to the delicious roasted chestnuts.

> Our tip: in Tesimo, there is a path which is lined by animal figures and fable stories made of felt - an amazing walk!
