San Michele Appiano

San Michele, the main village of the extensive municipality of Appiano on the Wine Road, is the cultural and economic centre

When people simply talk about Appiano, they usually mean San Michele (St. Michael, in German): it is the largest district of Appiano and the main village of the municipality. It is home to the town hall, the Lanserhaus with its gallery and the stalls of the farmers' market every Tuesday. The crenellated walls, bay windows and open staircases of the houses in the centre are excellent examples of the Oltradige Style: this late Gothic construction and architectural style is influenced by the Italian Renaissance.

If you are travelling from Bolzano towards south, the Appiano roundabout comes into view before the tunnel: the bus station is located there and the road to the right takes you right into the centre of San Michele. The settlements of Maderneid, Kreuzweg and Pigeno are also part of the village. The proximity to the provincial capital of Bolzano, about 9 km away, and the easy accessibility by public transport make San Michele Appiano a central and popular holiday destination. If you take the road to the left at the roundabout, you will reach the beautiful Monticolo Lakes.

San Michele is a village with very special events: These include the open-air club festivals in the park, the extended shopping evenings "Eppaner Sternstunden" in the alleys of the village and the eppanBike Days, where professional guides show you the most beautiful places in Appiano that can be reached by bike. In winter, the lantern-lined alleyways at the "LichterWeihnacht" as part of eppanAdvent lead you to the town hall square, where an impressive 4 metre high lantern made by local craftsmen can be admired.
