Chiusa

Chiusa is the main place of lower Valle Isarco

> Altitude: 523 metres above sea level

The municipality of Chiusa includes the town in the picture and the quarters Gudon, Lazfons, Pradello and Verdines. The place got its name from the Latin term “gaudere”, meaning to close and also the Italian term “Chiusa” means as much as closed.

Right above the pretty town towers the monastery of Sabiona, one of the oldest pilgrimage sites of Tyrol. For more than 300 years a female order has been living here. By the way: Did you know that in 2002 Chiusa was awarded one of Italy’s most beautiful spots? Already in earlier times, however, the town was known for its pretty townscape: In 1494, for instance, the renowned German painter Albrecht Dürer did a painting called “Das große Glück”, which portrays - surprise, surprise - the lovely town of Chiusa.

> We suggest: Hike to the monastery of Sabiona and pay a visit to the Loreto treasure exhibited at the local town museum!
