Those driving from Passo Brennero towards the south will find the first vines in the surroundings of Bressanone that is to say in pretty Varna, also known as the gateway of the south. The gentle climate allows for wine-growing and colourful chestnut trees and is ideally-suited to hikes and cycling tours in spring and autumn.
Here in Varna you might visit the Novacella abbey, featuring a valuable library, a Gothic cloister and a basilica. Right in front of the abbey is a lovely chapel, also known as the Castle of Angels. And after a guided tour across the abbey you might taste the refined wines made by the abbots themselves.
> We suggest: Try out the refreshing Kneipp basins and pay a visit to Lake Varna, especially rich in iodine!
