The village lies on the banks of the Aurino (Ahr), the tributary of the Rienza (Rienz) river, which rises in the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park at an altitude of more than 2,500 m a.s.l.

The Aurino Floodplain Forest Biotope, or Ahrauen in German, one of the most intact river landscapes in South Tyrol, also begin on the riverbank near Stegona and reach as far as Campo Tures.

If you walk from the town hall in Brunico towards west, you can reach Stegona, a district of Brunico and today virtually a suburb of the town, on foot in just a few minutes. In its central square, it still exudes a village atmosphere, while a few kilometres away you will find all the facilities and bustling life of a small town. At the end of October, however, Stegona is in the spotlight: This is when the fair takes place, the largest market in Tyrol and one of the traditional markets in South Tyrol.

For several days, the Stegona Market, steeped in history, is a busy place. Until a few years ago, animals and tractors also played a major role in the market. Sausages are eaten and the Lunapark, the funfair, is the meeting place for children. The large market square, located next to the football grounds, is connected by a bridge to the central village square, where there is a grocery shop and a hotel. From there, it is only a few streets to the St. Nicholas Church on the banks of the Aurino, the parish church of Stegona with its charnel house. It is one of the oldest churches in the area.

If you like to be active, Stegona (Stegen) is ideally located between the road leading to Falzes and the entrance to the Tures and Aurina Valleys. This is where the Valle Aurina Cycle Path runs through the Aurino Floodplain Forest Biotope, also known as Ahrauen. It is a protected area that starts here at Stegona and reaches as far as Campo Tures. On the other side are the forests that extend to Grimaldo, Falzes and finally Issengo. This part is known as the Val Pusteria Sun Road, the sun terrace of the Val Pusteria valley with excursion destinations such as the Issengo Pond.
