San Lorenzo

The famous Gold Coin Hoard from Roman times is today exhibited in the Mansio Sebatum Museum in the centre of San Lorenzo

Only the Rienza river separates San Lorenzo ("Lorenzn" in dialect), the main village of the market town of San Lorenzo di Sebato, from the Val Pusteria Road: The sign of the pharmacy and the Hotel Mondschein already point the way to the centre. There, the shops, cafés, facilities such as the library and the Mansio Sebatum Museum gather around the St. Lawrence Church with its two dissimilar towers. The place was already known in Roman times. Afterwards, Sanctum Laurentium came out of hiding again a millennium ago, especially in connection with the two castles in the area, Badia Castle and San Michele Castle, one of the oldest castles in the entire historic Tyrol.

Sebatum... the name that was noted in the ancient directory of the most important Roman imperial roads, did not let historians go for a long time. At first, the road station was assumed to be in the Valle Isarco, but finally the thesis of the German historian Theodor Mommsen was confirmed that it was located near San Lorenzo. The excavations were successful: Remains of a Roman road, houses with underfloor heating and the Gold Coin Hoard gradually came to light. The most important finds can be admired today in the Mansio Sebatum Museum in the village centre. It was opened a few years ago and is connected to the Archaeological Panorama Trail.

Another pleasant walk in San Lorenzo (Sankt Lorenzen), away from the through traffic of the Val Pusteria, is the Legend Trail, a family hike with fascinating stories. Cyclists are also often seen in San Lorenzo, travelling along the "Pusterbike" Cycle Path and enjoying an ice cream or a coffee here. All around you will find a children's playground, tennis courts and a multi-purpose field for volleyball, badminton and football. In winter, you can find an ice skating rink in the village as well as a ski bus that quickly takes you to Riscone to the lifts of the Plan de Corones Skiing Area.
