Planol

The hike to the Planol Hut combines the mountain landscape of the Val Venosta with the enjoyment of South Tyrolean delicacies

On the far western edge of the Oetztal Alps, you often hear the name Planol (Planeil): Planol is a district of Malles Venosta in the Planol Valley, in the middle of the Planol Mountains. There, mountain giants like the Cima dei Corvi and the Punta di Valbennaria, both well over 3,000 metres high, rise up into the sky. There is only one small village in the entire valley, the already mentioned Planol. It has its own primary school and clustered houses around the St. Nicholas Parish Church.

Almost untouched by tourism, Planol is nevertheless a popular excursion destination. Via the hiking and alpine path no. 6 you can climb up to the Passo di Planol ridge and from there continue to Melago in Vallelunga. Since the Val Venosta valley is well connected by public transport, it is also possible to return by public bus. The small valley on the western edge of Mt. Palla Bianca is drained by the Rio Puni, which continues to Malles and then flows into the Adige river.

Another popular hike in this high valley takes you on the Val Venosta High Route from the centre of Mazia to Planol, with views on one of the most beautiful sections of the Val Venosta. Also interesting is the circular hike to the Planol Mountain Hut, the Planeiler Alm, which combines wonderful nature with the enjoyment of the best South Tyrolean delicacies. In winter, the valley is covered in a blanket of snow and becomes a destination for winter hikers and ski tourers.
