The evocative – and revealing – power of memory and the archive is the central focus of Analogica 15, which – with the valued collaboration of the Fas Film Association of Southtyrol and the ZeLIG School for Documentary – presents the extraordinary and essential film by Maciej J. Drygas. Trains, a film entirely composed of archival materials, will be screened for the first time in Bolzano.
Drygas was expected to join us in Bolzano to present the film and lead a masterclass he had prepared with great enthusiasm. But Trains is – quite literally – moving fast, and in November it will compete at the prestigious Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards in the United States, a recognition that could pave the way for an Academy Award nomination. The director will therefore be in New York to promote the film in anticipation of a possible – and, we might add, much-desired – nomination.
The resonance of Drygas’s film will nonetheless be carried forward in a masterclass dedicated to the use of archives, led by Alessia Petitto, an Italian archive producer who has worked on archival research for Marco Bellocchio, Paolo Taviani, and Pietro Marcello.
Memory as a creative and narrative resource is the theme of the masterclass, divided into two sessions, which Analogica presents in collaboration with Fas and ZeLIG.
Private archives – a field of research and experimentation to which Analogica is deeply committed – are also represented in the program of Analogica Selection 15. Comprising 42 films from around the world, the selection showcases the most recent avant-garde film production on celluloid. Divided into 8 programs, the screenings will be hosted in the atmospheric 12th-century cellar of the historic Casa della Pesa (Waaghaus), a landmark building in Bolzano’s old town, with the support of the friends of WAAG.
Also at WAAG, filmmaker Marina Baldo will present BETA, an intimate and immersive performance – once again a journey into the private and personal memory of the Bolzano-born artist.
Closing this rich edition of Analogica is French artist and avant-garde filmmaker Gaëlle Rouard, who, in addition to leading a workshop on the reproduction and creation of 16mm loops hosted at FotoForum, will present her latest and striking work, projected in 16mm: DARKNESS, DARKNESS, BURNING BRIGHT. DARKNESS, DARKNESS, BURNING BRIGHT.
ANALOGICA 15 awaits you in Bolzano – five days of encounters, screenings, masterclasses, and conversations.
And the light – and the sound – of the projecto
