Messner Mountain Museum

One idea - six venues: MMM is a project brought into being by the famous alpinist Reinhold Messner.

MMM Firmian, MMM Juval, MMM Dolomites, MMM Ortles, MMM Ripa and MMM Corones - that’s how the six Messner Mountain Museums are called. Messner’s vision was to create a series of mountain museums - and he definitely succeeded in six astonishingly beautiful venues.

MMM Firmian - “The enchanted mountain” represents the main museum of the Messner Mountain Museum project - not only from an administrative point of view, but it is also the centrepiece regarding event organisation. The focus of this museum is set on the mountains and the art and history of their ascent, whereas the so-called “White Tower” is dedicated to the history of South Tyrol.

The MMM Juval - “Myth of mountain” in Castel Juval in beautiful Val Venosta includes various exhibits by Reinhold Messner regarding this particular myth. Moreover the antique castle hosts the largest tibetica collection worldwide.

The MMM Dolomites - “The museum in the clouds” on Monte Rite in the south of Cortina d’Ampezzo, located at 2,181 m asl, concentrates on the vertical world of the Dolomites. It’s the only museum of the Messner Mountain Museum project located outside South Tyrol.

The museum in Solda in upper Val Venosta, MMM Ortles - “At the end of the world”, is based on the famous “King Ortles” mountain peak, the highest mountain of Tyrol (3,905 m asl). The museum is an underground structure at 1,900 m asl and is devoted to the world of ice.

The fifth museum, called MMM Ripa - “The heritage of the Mountain”, is dedicated to hill tribes. Venue for this interactive mountain museum is Castel Brunico in Val Pusteria. Reinhold Messner also intends to invite representatives of various hill tribes to this place in order to promote the exchange of experiences. There are exhibits regarding the culture of the Sherpa, Indios, Tibetans and Hunza.

The MMM Corones - “Traditional alpinism” on the top of the famous Plan de Corones mountain is the sixth and last museum of the project. Located at 2,275 m asl, it is the highest museum of South Tyrol. The MMM Corones was opened in summer 2015 and illustrates the central topics, the big walls and the life of the mountaineers with unique art collections and objects, which Reinhold Messner has treasured in his life.
