Hike to Lake Sassalbo

This hike with starting point in Certosa in Val Senales takes you to a crystal-clear mountain lake

Starting point for our hike is the pretty hamlet of Certosa (Karthaus) in the Val Senales valley (1,372 m a.s.l.). From this point the hiking trail no. 23 takes you to a mountain refuge called "Malga di Convento" in Italian or "Klosteralm" in German (Monastery Refuge, 2,154 m a.s.l.).

After two hours of hiking across lovely larch forests, you will be there. Once the mountain hut belong to the Carthusian Order. Here the monks raised cattle and made cheese and butter out of the milk. After a little break it goes further upwards, always following path no. 23. The trail is well walkable, except at one part right before reaching Lake Sassalbo (Saxalbsee).

You will finally reach a beautiful view-point, from where you may watch pretty Lake Sassalbo and the surrounding mountains. As for the way back you may follow the same trail used for the way up. And don't forget to stop at the refuge for a bite to eat and enjoy the great surroundings.
