Hike to the Maso Gelato farm in the Val di Fosse

Nestled in the Oetztal Alps, the Val di Fosse valley is located at an altitude between 1,500 and 2,100 m a.s.l. - our hike leads us to the alpine pastures of the high valley until the Gelato Farm

Starting point of our hike is the Nassreid Farm, located at the road into the Val di Fosse valley, the largest side valley of the Val Senales. Here you can also enter the Merano High Route (no. 24). We follow the trail into the valley towards Casera di Fuori (Vorderkaser). After crossing the bridge the wide path through the Val di Fosse valley in the Tessa Nature Park starts. We walk slightly uphill until Casera di Mezzo (Mitterkaser), where the wide alpine meadows start.

Our next stage is the Rableid Mountain Hut and then the Maso Gelato hut (Eishof) which is located at more than 2,000 m a.s.l. After this almost 7 km long distance we have arrived at our final destination. In front of us we have the head of the valley with Mt. Altissima and Mt. Cima Bianca Grande. Behind us we can admire the summits of the Similaun and its neighbours in the Val Senales glacier area. From here the path would proceed further until the Passo Gelato (Eisjöchl) and the Rifugio Petrarca all'Altissima mountain hut (Stettiner Hütte) mountain hut, but we decide to finish our walk here because we also have to manage the way back.

By the way: The Maso Gelato, first mentioned in 1290, is located at 2,070 m a.s.l. and was inhabited all the year round during the warm periods of the last centuries. Today it is a base for hikers from May until autumn as mountain hut and inn.
