Walking tour to the Malga Zirmtal mountain hut

The idyllic Lago Zirmtal lake is named after the huge Swiss pine population in this area of the Val Venosta. It is said that already since the Middle Ages the lake attracts hikers who are looking for peace and quiet.

To reach the starting point of our hike we take the Val Venosta State Road. At the junction to Ciardes we branch off towards south (not towards the village) and cross the railway tracks and the Adige river. We pass the village of Tomberg and follow the forest road until the Schartegg parking space, where we leave our car.

We follow the forest path no.4 until the junction with path no. 9 which we take and walk to a large meadow where it crosses path no. 18. This path leads us to our destination. By the way: the Malga Zirmtal mountain hut won the “Most beautiful mountain hut of South Tyrol” award in 2014.

For our way back we take the path no. 18A which proceeds via the Malga Altalm (or Tomberger Alm) to the forest road no. 4 and finally to the parking space again.
