A three-hour hike across the fascinating Dolomite landscape is on our itinerary on this July day. Our starting point is the valley station in Obereggen, where the Oberholz Chairlift easily takes us to an altitude of over 2,000 metres. Up there, the Oberholz Hut (Berghütte Oberholz) awaits us, catching the eye with its striking architecture from the very first moment.

After a coffee break in the mountain hut and an encounter with a fox - something we certainly did not expect here - we follow hiking trail no. 18. This leads us straight to a fantastic viewpoint. A panoramic board names the surrounding peaks, while the rugged rock formations set against the clear South Tyrolean summer sky make a magnificent sight.

We then continue along trail no. 22 towards Obereggen. As the path becomes increasingly narrow and stony, sure-footedness is essential here. With constant ups and downs, we hike beneath the mighty rock faces of the Latemar Group, with shady forest sections providing a welcome cooling breeze. The colourful variety of alpine flowers is particularly beautiful.

After about three hours of actual walking, which gradually leads us to lower altitudes, it finally shimmers through the trees: the legendary Lake Carezza. As the lake is strictly protected, access to the shoreline is prohibited, but a circular path leads all the way around. On the opposite side of the road, a visitor centre with a bistro and a bus stop await us.

Thanks to the reliable bus connection back to Obereggen, we save ourselves the long walk back and take the bus instead. Our conclusion: A thoroughly rewarding hike that requires sure-footedness but rewards us with grand views of the Dolomites. A slightly longer route, but one that doesn't involve a chairlift ride and also leads to Lake Carezza, starts right in Obereggen.
