‘Südtirol quer’ trail - crossing South Tyrol in eight stages

Cross South Tyrol from east to west in eight daily stages, linking the Val Badia valley and the Val Venosta valley

The Ladin-speaking village of Longiarù is the starting point of a special route: a long-distance trail leading along existing paths to Mazia in the Val Venosta, tackling 6,100 metres of elevation gain. The 158-kilometre route includes 140 kilometres on foot, with the remainder covered by bus. It is divided into eight daily stages, requiring five to six hours of walking per day.

Longiarù and Mazia were not chosen by chance. They are the two 'Mountaineering Villages' in South Tyrol. Alpine clubs such as the ÖAV, DAV, AVS, CAI, PZS, and SAC award this honour to destinations across five Alpine countries. These villages dedicate themselves to sustainable tourism: The initiative aims to preserve local alpine character and protect it from mass tourism.

The trail crosses protected areas such as the Puez-Odle Nature Park and the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park. Along the way, you will pass lakes, cross historic mountain passes, and follow ancient irrigation channels. The route also leads through forests and scenic side valleys along traditional pilgrimage paths. This trail is designed for hikers with good fitness levels who want to explore South Tyrol on foot. It features varied terrains, diverse altitudes, and rich cultural impressions.

'Südtirol quer' highlights several unique landmarks. These include the Croce di Lazfons - one of the highest pilgrimage sites in Europe -, the car-free village of Plan and the Sabiona Monastery on the 'Acropolis of Tyrol'. Three sections of the trail are designed specifically to use eco-friendly public transport. Hikers can spend the night in huts or in accommodation down in the valleys. If you'd rather explore the countryside on two wheels, there's a route for cyclists and mountain bikers: The South Tyrol Cycle Path takes you right across the region in five daily stages.
