Windsurfing and Sailing

Thermal winds make Lake Caldaro and Lake Resia a prime destination for kitesurfers, sailors, stand-up paddlers and kayakers

Surfing and sailing on Lake Caldaro in the south of South Tyrol dates back to the 1930s. The local sailing club was founded shortly after, in 1947. This long tradition is no coincidence: Klaus Maran, a native of Caldaro, was a three-time world champion in windgliding. Today, South Tyrol's only windsurfing school, is located at the Gretl am See bathing establishment.

It helps you take your first steps on the board and provides equipment hire. Beginners' courses with qualified instructors lead to an internationally recognised basic windsurfing certificate issued by the VAW, the United Water Sports Training Associations. The on-site shop also stocks everything you need for the sport. Colourful sails are also a common sight on Lake Resia, as pictured.

In summer, the lake is a popular destination for kayakers, surfers, sailors and stand-up paddlers.
