Ski tour to Mount Giovo Grande

The ski tour to the Mt. Giovo Grande leads into the heart of the Braies Dolomites and is graded easy

The starting point is the P5 Ponticello car park in Braies di Fuori, from where we follow a gentle forest track into the valley within the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park. After about one kilometre, we reach a stream bed: We cross it and climb up the gully, either taking a steep shortcut or following the hairpin bends along the summer path. This ascent requires absolutely safe snow conditions! Below the rock towers, we keep to the right and continue along the summer trail.

It leads us first more steeply and then across a flat section into 'Kaserle' and on to the Rossalm Hut. The alpine hut is open for a few weeks in winter, serving pasta dishes and traditional Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy shredded pancake with jam served as a dessert or as a light lunch.

We head past the hut through a hollow, and soon the Giovo Grande (Grosser Jaufen) with its modest rounded summit comes clearly into view. Continuing across open terrain, we pass the Giovo Piccolo, and a short time later on this February day we stand atop the 2,480-metre summit.

We look out towards the sheer face of Mt. Croda del Becco, the Braies Dolomites and snow-covered Lake Braies. Looking east, the Sesto Dolomites and Three Peaks of Lavaredo emerge. Watch out for snow cornices along the summit ridge! The ski descent follows the ascent track.
