A large part of the woods in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park is made up of spruces and serves thus as the habitat for such animals as the heather cock, the European pine marten and the red fox. Also alpine pastures and mountain meadows cover large parts of the protected area, offering a big variety of plants and flowers, such as the mountain arnica and the Gentiana.
At altitudes higher than 2,000 m a.s.l., however, you will find mountain hares and snow grouses, as well as plants such as the edelweiss and the Rampion, the Horminum pyrenaicum and the yarrow, the mountain avens and the Globularia. The rocky area surrounding the waters of Lake Braies is ideal for watching Alpine ibexes and chamoises. The lake, part of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, is known as "Pearl of the Dolomite lakes".
