video : Hiking tip: Mt. Picco di Vallandro
On the saddle between the 2,839 m high Picco di Vallandro and the 3,146 m high Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo, the wide Prato Piazza - "Plätzwiese" in German - is located. It is part of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and provides a fascinating landscape, ideal for those seeking a natural scenery that has a relaxing impact. The area was able to preserve these precious characteristics. Particularly fascinating is the panoramic view on the surrounding mountains, such as the famous 3,221 m high Monte Cristallo, the Three Peaks of Lavaredo and the Tofane Massif.
The Prato Piazza is starting point for the hike on Mt. Picco di Vallandro. At 2,040 m a.s.l., close to the Vallandro Mountain Hut, the "Forte Prato Piazza" is located, a ruin of an Austro-Hungarian fortress. The high plateau is also popular in winter, for ski touring, snow-shoeing or tobogganing.
Already a long time ago there was an asphalted connection road between the Val Pusteria and the Valle di Landro valleys. Today, however, only the northern access is still asphalted. The high plateau is accessible in summer and winter by public means of transport or by car (toll from Ponticello), private busses, caravans and campers are not allowed.
