In the saddle between Mt Picco di Vallandro (2,839 m asl) and Mt Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo (3,146 m asl), the wide alpine pasture of Prato Piazza is located at 2,000 m asl. It provides a fascinating landscape, ideal for those seeking a natural scenery that has a relaxing impact. This alpine pasture makes part of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park. The natural and genuine area was able to preserve these precious characteristics, even if already a long time ago there was an asphalted connection road between the Val Pusteria and the Valle di Landro. Today, however, only the road from the Valle di Braies is still asphalted.
Particularly fascinating is the panoramic view on the surrounding mountains such as the famous 3,221 m high Monte Cristallo, the Three Peaks (Tre Cime di Lavaredo) and the Tofana massif.
Prato Piazza is starting point for the mountain tour on the Picco di Vallandro. At 2,040 m asl, close to the Vallandro mountain hut, the so-called “Forte Prato Piazza” is located, a ruin of an Austro-Hungarian fortress. The high plateau is also popular in winter, for ski touring, snow-shoeing or tobogganing.
