Valdaora di Sopra

South Tyrol’s largest riding stable and school is in Valdaora di Sopra and invites you for a ride on a Haflinger horse

On the eastern edge of the municipality of Valdaora lies Valdaora di Sopra. Its reservoir, a popular spot for anglers, stretches out nearby. On its shores, which are also lined with hiking trails, you can fish during the summer months with a licence. The lake itself dams the water of the Rienza River, which is used for energy generation by the Brunico-Valdaora hydroelectric power plant.

The houses of Valdaora di Sopra (Oberolang, literally: Upper Valdaora) are clustered around the late-Gothic Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary. The village's history, however, dates back many centuries: A monolith tells of a road that passed through here as early as 201 AD. Today, Valdaora di Sopra is popular with families. On the toboggan meadow between Valdaora di Mezzo and Valdaora di Sopra, they will find a tubing park and an airbag in the Kids Area Panorama.

In the forest above, you can shoot at numbered targets with a bow and arrow at the Kron Arc Adventure 3D archery course. If you enjoy being active, Valdaora di Sopra welcomes you with its wide range of activities. These range from hiking trails to the Angerer Hut and Brusada Hut to the village circular walk, which passes interesting local sites such as Bagni di Pervalle baths, the congress centre, a Roman milestone and the "Spitziges Stöckl", a plague memorial.

In addition, there is South Tyrol's largest riding stable with its warmbloods and Haflinger horses: the Tolderhof, one of the riding stables in the Val Pusteria. In winter, a shuttle bus will take you to the valley station of the Plan de Corones Skiing Area. For a change of pace, the toboggan runs from the previously mentioned alpine pastures - both of intermediate difficulty - lead down to Valdaora. The one from the Brusada Hut is the longest natural toboggan run in the area.

Notice: Due to the construction of the Riggertal loop and safety-related works, sections of the Val Pusteria Railway will be closed until January 2026. A rail replacement bus service will be in operation.
