Nature parks, mountain lakes and mighty peaks dominate Dobbiaco in the Upper Val Pusteria, the first village in the 3 Peaks Dolomite Region. There where the Three Peaks Nature Park begins, the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park ends. In 1908 Gustav Mahler already recognised that Dobbiaco is a particularly beautiful place, and he subsequently stayed here for three summers. The Gustav Mahler Music Weeks still commemorate the composer today. His composer's cottage can be admired in the wildlife park in Carbonin Vecchia, where the last three significant works were written: Das Lied von der Erde, the 9th Symphony and the unfinished 10th Symphony.
This is only one of the reasons why Dobbiaco is the cultural centre of the Upper Val Pusteria. Another is the Grand Hotel: Where a century ago guests of high society relaxed in splendid surroundings, today there is a cultural meeting place. The finest music is played here and interesting exhibitions take place. The two lakes in the municipal area also deserve special attention. They show how far Dobbiaco stretches: North of the main village are Santa Maria and the San Silvestro Valley. South of it, the road passes Lake Dobbiaco to Carbonin in the Valle di Landro valley, which then continues to Lake Landro. Then the road continues to Misurina...
Dolomiti Balloon Festival, Dobbiaco-Cortina cross-country skiing marathon, International Choir Festival and Dolomiti Superbike, the toughest MTB race in the Dolomites, alternate with visitor destinations such as the Bunker Museum, the Three Peaks Show Dairy, the high-rope course called Dobbiaco Adventure Park and the Wood Wonder World behind the Three Peaks Visitor Centre. The disused railway line to Cortina and the Val Pusteria Cycle Path are suitable for cycling tours, while the oldest Way of the Cross in Tyrol is ideal for a contemplative walk. In winter, skiers can enjoy the snow at the Rienza Ski Centre: Three lifts take you to the practice slope and the Trenker training slope, which are connected to the 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Region. Cross-country skiers, on the other hand, are attracted by the prepared tracks around the Dobbiaco cross-country ski stadium.
