A Mediterranean climate and the majestic peaks of the Tessa Group, vineyards and apple orchards all around - this is a first impression of Lagundo (Algund, in German), the garden village in the Merano region. The area stretches from the valley floor of the Adige river high up into the alpine mountain world of the Tessa Group Nature Park, an inspiring combination for all those searching for relaxation and nature. From the slopes near Rio Lagundo above the valley basin, accessible by cable car, Lagundo extends down into the orchards of Ried di Lagundo and up to the narrow section of the valley near Foresta. It is famous for the eponymous castle, where the minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein is said to be held captive by his mistress, and its brewery.
On the other side of the valley, Lagundo stretches up into the idyllic hills of Plars, into the mountain village of Velloi and then southwards to Rio Molino and Lagundo village. With 160 km of hiking and walking paths between the Tessa Group Nature Park, the largest of South Tyrol, and the valley floor, the municipality is an insider's tip for hiking lovers. If you prefer to be on two wheels, the Val Venosta Cycle Path passes by the village: it ends in the spa town of Merano and joins the Adige Cycle Path there, which leads up to the provincial capital of Bolzano. The most famous hike is the one along the Lagundo Waalweg path, highly appreciated because of its location on the sunny slope along the historic irrigation channel. It ends in Tel, so you can easily return by bus.
A special feature of Lagundo is the large number of churches and chapels. The Maria Steinach Monastery, a bridgehead of the Via Claudia Augusta as well as valuable frescoes and cup-marked stones, cult stones from pre-Christian times, complete the journey into past centuries and millennia. In between, farmers' markets take place, the apple blossom enchants the entire valley basin and the "Forst Christmas Forest" bathes the Christmas days in a cosy atmosphere.
