Hiking along the Waalweg to Juval Castle

Walking along traditional irrigation channels end enjoying the beautiful scenery.

The so-called “Waalwege” originate in long passed times (first written documents date back to the year 1200), when local farmers built special irrigation channels to water their fields and meadows. Today as in the past these channels represent beautiful hiking paths lined by colourful sceneries.

Our round trail strats at Ciardes in Val Venosta. This is where you follow the signs 1A up to a driveway to some farms and this is exactly where you come across the Val Senales Waalweg trail. You, however, proceed on the archeologic hiking path n° 3 and in east direction until the hiking path ends slightly below Juval Castle. We also recommend you to make a visit to this castle, containing a series of exhibits of the alpinist Reinhold Messner.

Descend on path n° 1 past Sonnenhof to Stava, where you take the Stava Waalweg trail, leading you back to Ciardes.
