Gran Pilastro
Gran Pilastro is one of the main mountains of the Alpi Aurine.
The highest mountain of the Zillertal Alps is called Gran Piastro and it is considerable 3,510 m high. Its summit is part of the main ridge of the mountain chain and it represents the national border between Austria and Italy.
The Gran Pilastro, which belongs to the Alps of Valle Aurina, consists of a massive alpine central gneiss, covered by green slate. The north face is glaciated and forms a ramarkable 300 m high ice wall. This route is one of the classic alpine routes!
If you would like to scale this mountain, you can also choose the easier version via south west ridge, which begins at the Gran Pilastro refuge (2,710 m). This was also the route Peter Fuchs, Paul Grohmann and Georg Sarner choose for the first ascent in 1865.
