The friendly village actually got its name from its ancient parish church dedicated to Saint Martin. Built in the 12th century it is a very beautiful church with countless white-golden angels painted on the ceiling. In the course of the centuries, a quaint little village has developed around the parish church.
From the very first moment you will feel the traditional values of this place. Ancient frescoes on the so-called “Malerhaus” - the painters’ house - or on other houses remind of long passed times and the annual Martini Market or the local village festival bring old traditions to live again. At the moment, San Martino is known as the biggest village of the valley…
Towering above the road that leads up to Passo Rombo is the Monte Neve Adventure Mine and Open Air Museum. The mine will take you back to glorious times, when Monte Neve was known as the highest mine in all of Europe. It can be reached only by foot and besides a fascinating show room it also boasts a coinage centre and a pretty little church. And the ride through the tunnels promises a great experience!
> We suggest: Visit the waterfalls near San Martino and hike up to the Pfandler Alm hut, where famous freedom fighter Andreas Hofer was captured!
