Near the place of discovery of Ötzi, there is a lovely lake.
The Lago di Vernago is a reservoir, that is to say an artificial lake, which is situated in the middle of Val Senales in the west of Merano and is fed by Rio Senales.
This lake is situated at 1,689 m and covers a surface of about 100 ha. In the surroundings of the lake you have got numerous possibilities regarding leisure time activities. You can for example make a walk round the lake or hike to the place of discovery of the famous ice man Ötzi. In winter this area attracts a large number of people due to the Senales whole-year-round skiing area.
Moreover numerous fish species spash about in the waters of Lake Vernago, for example brown trouts, rainbow trouts and pikes, which are very popular with fishermen. The small village of Vernago is situated at the lakeside.
