The Zillertal Alps belong to the European Central Alps and are situated at the border of Austria and Italy. Most of this mountain range is part of Tyrolean territory, whereas one mountain peak is part of Salzburg.
The Zillertal Alps can be classified into the subgroups Tux ridge (Tuxer Kamm), Zillertal Alps Main ridge (Zillertaler Hauptkamm), Reichenspitz mountain range, Zillertaler Hauptkamm (East), the Monti di Fundres and the Alpi Aurine, situated on South Tyrolean territory.
The Monti di Fundres include some interesting and popular mountain peaks. The glaciers in this area are slightly smaller and higher located than in other regions. However, reknown mountain peaks of the Monti di Fundres are the Gran Pilastro (3,510 m) and the Picco della Croce (3,134 m).
The Zillertal Alps are composed of granite gneiss and other rocks. Moreover the area of the Zillertal Alps is a protected area.
Our recommendation: a hike from the Lago di Neves to Ponte di Ghiaccio refuge at 2,545 m.
Highest peak: Gran Pilastro (3,510 m)
First ascent Gran Pilastro: 24th July 1865, Paul Grohmann, Georg Samer and Peter Fuchs
