Monguelfo

Monguelfo, located where Val Casies branches off Val Pusteria, belongs to the holiday area Plan de Corones.

> Altitude: 1,087 m asl

A large number of findings testimony that Monguelfo (German Welsberg) and surroudings have already been settled in the Bronze age. The Roman Road, leading to Dobbiaco in Alta Val Pusteria, still reminds on the Roman Castle with its settlement, which has been located at the place where the monastery is situated today.

The name of the village is referrable to the house of the Welfsperch, who administered the area for the Earls of Görz in those times. In 1359 Georg von Welsperg had the artificial lake been drained and as a consequence people started settling down on this piece of land.

Situated in a great natural landscape with a great view on the Dolomites, Monguelfo offers perfect conditions for relaxing and peaceful holidays in the heart of an intact natural landscape, surrouded by a unique mountain scenery. You won’t be able to sit still considering these great outdoors.

Are you also interested in culture and landscape? If so, visit the S. Margereth parish church in the centre of the village. This church, which has been built in 1736/38, boasts altarpieces of the famous artist Paul Troger.

Our tip: visit Welsperg Castle, which is venue for concerts and art exhibitions.
