With the villages of Stelvio, Solda, Trafoi and Gomagoi, the municipality comprises the heart of the Ortles region with the highest mountain peak of Tyrol.
The 3,905 m high Ortles is the highest elevation of the Eastern Alps. King Ortles, how this mountain is also called, is embedded in an entire mountain range, the Ortles-Cevedale mountain range. This area is a giant natural paradise, which in 1935 was declared a protected area by the Italian king. This is how the Stelvio National Park came into being.
The municipality of Stelvio counts 1,200 inhabitants, living in the villages of Solda, Trafoi, Stelvio village and Gomagoi. The area of the Ortles can be accessed by the legendary Passo dello Stelvio road with its 48 characteristic hairpin bends stretching via the 2,758 Alpine pass and continuing to Lombardy.
In winter the municipal area of Stelvio, which is by the way home of the ski pioneer Gustav Thöni, is a real winter paradise. The slopes of Trafoi and Solda are known beyond borders. Even in summer you can ski at Passo dello Stelvio. The three skiing areas of the municipality of Stelvio are the heart of the Ortles skiing area.
Our tips: a mountain bike tour in the mountains and a visit to the pilgrimage chapel “Tre Fontane” (three fountains) with its healing water spring.
