Ortisei

The municipality of Ortisei is known for its charming and lively centre and is a particularly popular holiday destination.

Ortisei, the chief village of the Val Gardena, is a market town with more than 4,600 inhabitants. The municipal area ranges from 1,125 m to 2,518 m asl at the mountain ridge of the Rasciesa and is located at the right Gardena riverbank. Parts of the municipality are the village of Ortisei as well as the village of San Giacomo. Despite of the fact that Bullaccia, Roncadizza and Oltretorrente make part of Castelrotto, they are assigned to Ortisei from a linguistic, clerical and spacial-geographical viewpoint.

The focus, however, is set on the magic world of mountains surrounding Ortisei. The mountains of Rasciesa, Seceda, Mont Seuc (Alpe di Siusi) transform Ortisei into a real paradise for hikers, mountain bikers and those who simply love nature. Comfortable lift facilities take you into the heart of the Dolomites, both in summer and winter.

One of the most important columns of the tradition in Valgardena is wood carving: this arts has originally developed at the beginning of the 17th century as occupation in winter months. Meanwhile it is an arts that is world-famous.
