The municipality of Naz-Sciaves (Natz-Schabs) is situated on a terrace with a favourable climate at an altitude between 750 and 890 metres.

Of course, each of the five villages has its own church: In Sciaves, it is the late-Gothic Parish Church of Saint Margaret the Virgin with its unusually tall and slender church tower.

The plateau is a well-known apple-growing region, an image promoted by the Apple Queen of Naz-Sciaves, the most famous product queen with the longest tradition in South Tyrol.

The main varieties grown here are Jonathan and Golden Delicious (pictured): The yellowish, sweet and aromatic Golden Delicious is the most important pale green apple variety in world trade.

In spring, Naz-Sciaves is a sea of white blossoms: In the weeks between early April and early May, depending on the weather conditions, thousands of apple trees come into bloom here.

Various events centred around apples and apple blossom take place throughout the year, including the Blossom Festival with the South Tyrolean Blossom Weeks and the Big Apple Festival.

The end of the harvest in autumn is also celebrated with the Toerggelen, when inns and “Buschenschänke” (farm inns) open to offer roasted chestnuts, meat platters, and new wine.

The Alpen Flair festival attracts around 50,000 visitors each year, with music stars from the rock, metal, punk and Schlager scenes performing for several days at the festival grounds in Naz.

The village tour is a walk of about three hours across the apple plateau of Naz-Sciaves, passing through several village centres and showing you the most important biotope in the area.

Such as the village tour, also the one-hour Stegerbühel Circuit takes you past the Croce di Fiumes: This memorial chapel commemorates the fact that this site was once a battlefield.

Another recommended tour leads into the depths of the Rienza Gorge: It can be crossed via two bridges - the Rundl bridge in Sciaves offers a view of the decommissioned, castle-like Rundl power station, and Castel Rodengo is also visible.

The Apple Trail starts at the village square in Naz and tells fascinating stories about apple cultivation in the region: As it is over seven kilometres long, a break on the relax loungers on the Ölberg is ideal.

Pile dwellings once stood here: Along the signposted circular path at the Raier Moos biotope, the most important wetland in Naz-Sciaves, you can discover rare plant species.

It was once a large lake that formed about 12,000 years ago - very close to the biotope is the Apple Garden (Apfelgarten) play park, a popular destination for families with young children.

The town of Bressanone, with its cathedral square, is a few kilometres away: It is an inviting destination all year round, offering access to the Plose skiing and hiking area and the Acquarena, a complex with indoor and outdoor pools.

In winter, the Plose opens its ski slopes and the RudiRun 9.0 toboggan run, which leads down to the valley station at 1,000 metres above sea level.

Alternatively, you can enjoy the Gitschberg Jochtal Skiing Area near Maranza and Valles, which is the largest ski resort in the entire Valle Isarco valley.

Every two years, hundreds of Krampus from South Tyrol and the Alpine region descend on Naz-Sciaves for the “Tuifltog” (Devil’s Day) - things are more relaxed at the “Natzna Advent”, where Saint Nicholas also makes an appearance.

On a climatically favourable mid-altitude plateau near Bressanone, biotopes, meadows, vineyards and forests alternate. Countless apple trees stand in between, shaping the landscape: In addition to apple varieties like the sweet, slightly tart Golden Delicious with its red blush, and the deep-red Jonathan, which keeps well, the white grapes Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner are also cultivated here. You can taste all these specialities when the traditional "Buschenschänke" open their doors in autumn for the Toerggele season.

These farm taverns are only open for a limited time each year, delighting guests with homemade delicacies. In spring, the apple blossom transforms the low-traffic plateau into a wonderful place for hiking and cycling. This natural spectacle is celebrated with the Blossom Festival and its gourmet mile.

The apple harvest in autumn is followed by the Apple Festival, which includes the crowning of the new Apple Queen. In between, in June, fans of rock, Schlager music and heavy metal will find plenty to enjoy at the Alpen Flair Festival, South Tyrol's largest folk festival. Even a playground, the Apple Garden play park in Rasa, and a themed trail are dedicated to the apple.

So you are well supplied with vitamins. The high plateau of Naz-Sciaves is located at the junction of two valleys: On one side lies the Val Pusteria, and on the other, the Valle Isarco with the town of Bressanone. The municipality's five villages are scattered amidst the greenery - you can explore them on foot on the village tour. This trail leads you not only through the centres of Rasa, Naz, and Fiumes, but also to the reed-covered Raier Moos, the most significant biotope on the plateau.

Where people once settled in pile dwellings in prehistoric times, today you can find dragonflies, birds and frogs. In winter, two ski resorts are in the immediate vicinity: Gitschberg Jochtal, which was formed by the merger of two areas, and the Plose, Bressanone's local mountain.
