Sarntal, Wegweiser Stoanerne Mandln 2009

Val Sarentino

South Tyrol’s municipality with the highest number of villages.

> Altitude: 961 metres above sea level (Sarentino)

Stretching from the north of Bolzano across Passo di Pennes to the town of Vipiteno, Val Sarentino Valley boasts a length of 50 km and includes the villages Sarentino, Campolasta, San Martino, Valdurna, Corvara, Rio Bianco and Pennes. In Upper Val Sarentino you will find the ski area Reinswald, which is part of the huge Ortler Skiarena and promises great fun for the whole family.

In the Sarntal valley, as it is known in German, traditions and customs are still alive. Definitely worth seeing are for instance the traditional costumes. Have you already had a look at the “Sarner Jancker”, a traditional hand-knitted jacket made out of wool and shag? The best remedy for all those eternally-freezing people out there ;-)
And in Val Sarentino you will also find professions that were already thought “extincted”, such as quill pen embroiderers, basket makers or pipe carvers!

> We suggest: Watch a quill pen embroiderer at work and pay a visit to the “Steinmandln”, little men made of stones right under the peaks of the mountains!
