Fiumes

From the “Waldertor” walk above the village, the view extends to the impressive Rodengo Castle on the opposite side of the Rienza Gorge

The smallest holiday village on the high plateau of Naz-Sciaves is called Fiumes (Viums). The place names in this area date back to ancient times and are often linked to winegrowing. It is thought that the name Fiumes - known as "Fiummes" a millennium ago - also derives from a term related to grapevines. Today, both grapes and apples thrive here, forming a sprawling orchard together with the large chestnut trees. In autumn, it promises a bountiful harvest.

You can enjoy this during the Toerggele season, when the "Buschenschänke", the local farm inns, open their doors. Their history also goes back a long way: In the past, some farmers were permitted to process a portion of their grapes into wine and sell it themselves. The green sign at the farm gate, the "Buschen", became the symbol that the inn was open. In spring, on the other hand, you are surrounded by a sea of blossoms when the buds of the fruit trees open.

In Fiumes itself, the little Church of St. Magdalene is a particularly lovely sight. This "Viummer Kirchl", as it is affectionately known, stands on a rounded hill and is considered one of the most beautiful places of worship in the area. Another chapel is located above it at the Viummer Kreuz.

This Schützen Chapel is a reminder that battles were once fought here. Both the village tour around Naz-Sciaves and the one-hour Stegerbühel circular walk lead past the delicate white chapel. A walk to the Sommersürs biotope is a perfect way to round off a stay on the apple plateau. There, with a bit of luck, you can observe various waterfowl and reptiles.
